Artisans Reflection: Matt Reed

Getting the privilege to volunteer every Saturday at Artisans has been one of the greatest experiences I have had here at Gonzaga thus far. When I first met my mentee, Cameron, I knew I we were going to get along quite well when the first thing he said to me was, “The Seahawks are going to crush the 49ers this weekend.” It was quite striking to me but also gave me quite the chuckle. From that first instinct of meeting until the end of hanging out, we talked about the Seahawks the whole time. He knew more about the team and stats from the season than me… which is honestly quite impressive.

Every Saturday from there on out, we spent a majority of our time discussing the previous weeks game and then going onto the computer to at Seahawks highlight videos and such. And then I finally got Cameron to get his mind off Seahawks football and I came to find out he was very good at the board game checkers. Every time I give him a hint on a good move, he makes the remark, “Matt hold on I have a strategy going so I can beat you.” He never fails to beat me.

With only a month or two left of mentoring on the Saturday crew, I truly hope I never lose connection with the members of Artisans and most importantly, Cameron. Through my time at Artisans, I have been told every Saturday by another fellow mentee that I am his best friend and one other whom calls me her boyfriend. Overall, Artisans is an amazing organization.
