Service Reflection: Sarah Crowley

Since it’s the start of the basketball season Bryan, Jake, Emily, Elizabeth, and I thought it would be a perfect time to play basketball with our mentees. We met our mentees at the Rudolph Center and the first thing I noticed was that my mentee, Amy, did not look enthused to be there whatsoever. I asked her how she was and if she was excited to play and she gave me a look and said, “Ehhh. I don’t know.” She then proceeded to tell me that during work she had burnt her fingers so she couldn’t move her right hand, which is her dominate hand. I was a little worried and started to try and figure out how we were going to spend 2 full hours playing basketball when she had hurt her ha

We started shooting for a bit and she told me all about how she was the captain of her Hoopfest team with her roommates and how her dad would take her to some of Gonzaga’s basketball games. She got really excited when she said that her and her dad had met John Stockton. Eventually we started shooting granny style because of her hand until Emily came over and suggested we take a walk around campus.

We got to take pictures with Spike which none of our mentees had done before and we walked through lower Crosby so they could show us where they had their Monster Bash with GUSR. After meeting with Amy for three weeks I know she loves two things: Justin Bieber and Korra from Avatar: The Last Airbender. She decided to be Korra for Halloween so when we walked through LoCro she talked all about her costume and the Monster Bash. It’s always cool to see Amy get excited about things that she loves, so it awesome to hear her talk about how she dressed up.

Although we didn’t do a lot on Monday, I had a great time. I try to be completely present during service because it will be more beneficial for Amy and I will probably get more out of the service when I give all my time and energy. Monday was a great break to just be able to hang out and take a step away from my hectic week.
